Minecraft for Mac Air: A Surprisingly Smooth Experience with M1 Java

As a parent, it's always exciting to see your child enjoy their favorite games without any issues. However, when it comes to Minecraft on a mid-2012 MacBook Air, my son often complains of low framerates and lag, especially when doing screen recordings. This is despite trying various solutions, including an Elgato screen recorder box.

After conducting extensive research and testing, I'm thrilled to report that the new Minecraft Java for M1 has delivered exceptional results. In fact, it's been a game-changer for us. By switching to the ARM version of Java, which is not bundled with MacOS, we've been able to achieve frame rates that were previously unattainable.

When running at high resolution and a render/simulation distance of 32 chunks, our MacBook Air was capable of reaching an impressive 500-700 frames per second. This is comparable to the performance achieved by YouTubers who use M1 native versions of Minecraft. Of course, frame rates can drop as low as 60FPS in some cases, but this is still a significant improvement over what we were experiencing before.

For comparison purposes, I also tested running x86 Java Minecraft through Rosetta on my 16' MacBook Pro with 10 CPUs and 32 GPU cores. Unfortunately, the results were disappointing – frequent slowdowns and frame rates as low as 20FPS made the game barely playable.

The key takeaway from our experience is that using an ARM version of Java can make a significant difference in terms of performance.
